This memorial honors the life and
work of Thomas Jefferson, the
third president of the United
States, the author of the Declara-
tion of Independence, and a key
framer of the U.S. Constitution.
The monument was authorized by
congress in 1934, and dedicated on
April 13, 1943, the 200th anniver-
sary of Jefferson's birth.
Set on the 18 acres on the south
bank of the Tidal Basin in Wash-
ington, D.C., the Jefferson Memo-
rial was designed by John R. Pope,
Otto R. Eggers, and Daniel P.
Higgins to reflect the classic style
Jefferson used in his own archi-
tectural designs. Inside the marble-
lined dome of the monument
stands a bronze statue of Jefferson
sculpted by Rudolph Evans.
