Arc de Triomphe Paris France

The Arc de Triomphe, which
stands in the Place Charles de
Gaulle at the end of the Champs-
Elysees in Paris, was planned by
Napoleon for his triumphal entry
into Paris in 1810. Unfortunately,
the 164-foot arch wasn't completed
until 1836.

The Arc de Triomphe is covered
with relief sculptures of scenes
from France's history. The most
famous relief, called "Departure of
the Volunteers 1792," but more
commonly known as The
Marseillaise, sculpted by Francois
Rude, depicts the Motherland with
outstretched wings calling for vol-
unteers to fight for France.
